I’ve shared this quote from David Bowie as recorded in a Rolling Stone article about Harry Styles.
Apparently, David Bowie said this to Harry as his career launched:
“If you feel safe in the area that you’re working in, you’re not working in the right area. Always go a little further into the water than you feel you are capable of being in. Go a little bit out of your depth. And when you don’t feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you’re just about in the right place to do something exciting.”–David Bowie
I share the quote with students who feel overwhelmed or in over their heads with job interviews or new opportunities. When you feel like you can’t quite get your footing and that you’re out of your depth, something exciting just might happen next.
