Darkness and Then Beauty

IMG_0073

The flair moment came early this morning as I enter the English Department. Mounds and mounds of fresh, dark soil rise so high they nearly block my view.

It smells like spring. It smells like the rich, warm, earthy smell of things happening.

I know what these piles mean: landscaping, planting, and stunning growth. In a few months, we’ll have something beautiful here.

But right now? It’s just dark soil. It’s just ugly and messy and too much.

But soon? The planting of seeds, the shaping of land, the creation of beauty! Chaos and darkness first, order and beauty later.

I remember this: When what I see before me looks dark and blocking, perhaps it’s the perfect soil for some seed God needs to plant and some part of me that needs shaping.
