Some Beauty and Some Mystery

An update:

The garden baskets grow–almost too well on one side. The blackberries look so healthy. (We’re using “scare tape” — a shimmery and reflective strip of tape that you hang near your berries to scare birds away. The tape looks like a snake or predator, and they supposedly flee. I’ll keep you posted if that works.)

Meanwhile, I made the first batch of pesto. My student who traveled to Italy returned with a recipe for pesto, and I tried it today. It’s so simple–1 cup of basil leaves, 3 cloves garlic, 1/2 cup good olive oil, a tablespoon of pine nuts, and 1/2 cup fresh parmesan cheese. I used almonds instead of pine nuts to save money. It’s still delicious! We’ll serve it atop our pasta tonight or with chicken. My neighbor shared that he loves pesto with baked potatoes.

In other news, we found a lone duck egg by the creek. I’ll return to hopefully find others in the same spot. Otherwise, it’s a mystery to solve: the lone duck egg. I’ve never found a duck egg before in my life, so I’m hoping to witness the hatching of little ducklings one day.
