What We Don’t Work For

I’m amused by how much of my summer garden already happens without my awareness, planning, and cultivation.

Things happened today as if they never depended upon me

I will harvest what I didn’t work for.

God reminds me of all I don’t work for–of all He graciously and mercifully provides–without my awareness, planning, or cultivation.

It depends on Him, not me. I didn’t have to act like a good gardener. I didn’t do anything but place a seed of truth there all those years ago into soil others prepared in my own heart.

I remember what I don’t work for anymore as I tromp through all the growing mint, asparagus, and strawberries I had nothing to do with this year.

And that curious little asparagus shoots up and offers a picture of grace.
